History of Nolensville Tennessee
The story of the hard-working, honest people of Nolensville in Williamson County Tennessee all started back in the late 1790′s with a hard-working honest pioneer family. As William and Sarah Nolen and their five children were passing through the area that is now the town of Nolensville, they suffered a small but historical accident. Their wagon wheel broke. This turn of fortune’s wheel was the beginning of Nolensville. Unable to continue the trip, William found the land to his liking, rich soil and good hunting. The forest in the area was so thick that Sarah tied cowbells around the children’s neck so they would not get lost, and also so that the children would not be kidnapped by Indians.
-William Nolen was born in Albermarle County Virginia around 1760. He served in the Revolutionary War and was granted land in the new territory for his military service. William continued to serve in the Tennessee Militia.
-William Nolen built the first log home in Nolensville and speculation persist that the log home is now part of the Newt McCord Home.
-William Nolen owned most of the land where the town of Nolensville is situated and his peach orchard occupied the present site of the town.
-William ran a tavern or eating place from his home. In 1822 William’s daughter, Annie, wrote that she enjoyed seeing the many different people who passed through the town.
-William and Sarah Nolen had a large family of sixteen children.
-William Nolen died in 1850 at 90 years of age and again speculation has him buried “on the old William Nolen farm where Newt McCord lives near the creek.”
